Paper Newly Published in JMIR Demonstrates the Efficacy of Digital Platforms to Increase Engagement with Diverse Populations in Health Research

FAIRFAX, Va.–25 Jan., 2025–A pioneering study titled “Building a Digital Health Research Platform to Enable Recruitment, Enrollment, Data Collection, and Follow-Up for a Highly Diverse Longitudinal US Cohort of 1 Million People in the All of Us Research Program: Design and Implementation Study” has been published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research.

This collaborative research, led by investigators from Vibrent Health, Inc., along with esteemed colleagues from Boston VA Research Institute, University of Miami, and The Task Force for Global Health, Inc., details the development and implementation of a comprehensive digital health research platform (DHRP).

The DHRP was instrumental in the All of Us Research Program (AOU), a nationwide initiative aimed at recruiting 1 million participants from diverse cultural, socioeconomic, demographic, and geographic backgrounds. The platform facilitated recruitment, enrollment, data collection, and follow-up processes, ensuring inclusivity and accessibility for participants across the United States.

The paper analyzes the efficacy of the use of the following components of the DHRP:

Participant Experience Manager (PXM): A user-centric interface designed to accommodate varying levels of digital literacy and comfort, ensuring a positive experience for all participants.

Research Cloud (RC): A secure, cloud-based infrastructure supporting data storage, management, and integration with third-party applications, maintaining high standards of data privacy and security.

Researcher Workbench (RW): Tools enabling researchers to analyze and interpret collected data efficiently, fostering collaboration and accelerating biomedical research.

The study highlights the platform’s success in engaging a highly diverse cohort, with participants representing a wide range of ages, races, ethnicities, and socioeconomic statuses. This diversity is crucial for ensuring that research findings are generalizable and can lead to improved health outcomes for all groups.
