Reducing the burden and cost of mental healthcare in the UK

The Challenge:
A System  Under Strain

According to BMA, good mental health is essential to a functioning society. Mental health problems and poor mental health can also influence all aspects of a person’s life and relationships, often causing huge anguish to individuals, families, and communities. Mental illness carries a huge cost to individuals, society, and the health and social care system. Without the appropriate treatment or support, mental illness can lead to lost productivity and the need for informal care; mental ill health has been estimated to cost around £118 billion annually to the UK economy, and nearly £101 billion in England alone, equivalent to roughly 5% of the UK’s GDP.

UK society is not set up to support people’s mental health and to prevent the onset of mental illness.

NHS waiting lists are at record highs, with limited clinician capacity.

More than 50% rise in disability benefit claims among working-age adults for ment health conditions.

One in six adults in England have a common mental health disorder.

Comprehensive Digital Mental Health Service and Tools

On-demand Mental Health Screenings & Triage

(Early detection & referral optimisation)
  • Whole Pathway approaches to patient care.

  • Any standardised screening tool (e.g. PHQ-9, GAD-7, WSAS, PSS-10).

  • Automated patient pathways – directs users to self-help, GP, or specialist care.

  • Automated risk stratification – identifies those needing urgent intervention.

Cognitive & Neuropsychiatric Assessments

(For ADHD, depression, anxiety, dementia & cognitive health tracking)
  • Attention & Impulse Control: Flanker Task, Continuous Performance Test.

  • Memory & Learning: Verbal & Visual Paired Associates, Digit Span.

  • Decision-Making & Executive Function: Matrix Reasoning, Choice Reaction Time.

Multimodal Digital Biomarkers & Wellbeing Metrics

(Holistic approach to mental & physical health)
  • Physical activity & sleep monitoring – identifying patterns linked to mental health.

  • Heart rate variability & stress response tracking – integrating physiological markers.

  • Social determinants of health integration – capturing wider influences on wellbeing.

An Evidence-Based, Digital-First Solution

Developed in collaboration with and funding from the US NIH and National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH)

A first-of-its-kind data-driven tool used by 110,000 patients in the US is helping researchers explore mental health and cognition in new ways.

Technology-enabled mental health tools can support early identification, triage, and intervention, ensuring individuals receive the right level of care at the right time. Such tools can provide effective long-term follow-ups, large-scale screenings, and capturing of real-world data related to changes in mental health for diverse populations.

This validated tool can help reduce mental health inequalities and is ready for use in the UK.

Automate screenings, assessments, early detection & triage to direct patients to the right level of care.

Enable the trust to hit the target waiting times.

Address Digital poverty and reduce cost.

Integrate with NHS Digital Services, supporting GPs, ICBs & mental health trusts.

Citizen-Driven Healthcare by Meeting People Where They Are

Validated through a broad range of studies and trials and the US NIH All of Us Research Program, Vibrent’s digital platform enables research beyond clinical sites by scaling remote participation in communities and homes, community engagement, and inclusive multi-modal data collection across diverse populations. Now, these capabilities are available to the UK to help research teams expand access, ease participant burden, and accelerate insights.

Why This Matters for the NHS

  • Improve quality of patient care – Through whole pathway approaches to patient care and reduce load on the healthcare system.

  • Scalable & cost-effective – Reduces GP, A&E & crisis care demand.

  • Remote-first & patient-led – Supports NHS digital transformation priorities.

  • Reduce inequalities – On demand access by people, where they live and work.

  • Seamless NHS integration – Aligns with EPRs, EHRs & digital patient records.

  • reduce cost to the NHS

Next Steps for NHS Adoption

  • Pilots with mental health trusts, teaching hospitals, ICBs to refine pathways.

  • Expansion into primary care, IAPT, & community mental health settings.

  • Scaling automated mental health triaging for workforce optimisation.

Vibrent’s flexible, NHS-ready platform is designed to improve quality of patient care, reduce strain, enhance early intervention, and improve mental health outcomes across the UK.
